Deneuve, Catherine

(1943- )
   actor
Born Catherine Dorléac in Paris to French actors Renée Deneuve and Maurice Dorléac, Catherine Deneuve first attracted attention when RoGER vadim starred her in La Vice et la vertu (1962). She then achieved much renown with her role in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) by Jacques Demy. She also appeared in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967) with her sister Françoise Dorléac. Deneuve's later roles were often based on characters whose dark personalities were hidden behind beautiful facades (Repulsion, 1965; Belle de Jour, 1967). Her subsequent roles include performances in Tristana (1970), Le dernier Métro (1980), Le Lieu du crime (1986), and Indochine (1992), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Deneuve's mysterious screen persona and beauty have made her an icon of European film.
